Inside Mount VS. Outside Mount: Which One Should I Choose?

Before taking any measurements, decide whether an inside mount or an outside mount best suits your window and aesthetic preferences. Each option offers distinct advantages.

Inside Mount Your Window Treatments

  • You have sufficient window depth for the treatment to fit neatly within the frame.
  • You desire a clean, minimalist look that highlights your window trim.
  • The window trim is visually appealing and should remain exposed.
  • You prefer the window treatment to blend seamlessly with the wall, without protruding.
  • Your window frames are sturdy enough to support the mounting hardware.
  • Your windows are perfectly rectangular, ensuring a snug fit.
  • An outward-extending windowsill would interfere with an outside mount.

Outside Mount Your Window Treatments

  • Your window depth is insufficient, or the window is irregularly shaped, making an inside mount unsuitable.
  • You wish to conceal unattractive window trim or refresh the window’s appearance.
  • Maximum light blockage and privacy are primary concerns, as outside mounts minimize light gaps.
  • The window frame is too fragile or shallow for inside mounting hardware.
  • You aim to create the illusion of taller or larger windows.
  • You want to avoid any obstruction of the window when the treatment is fully raised.

Measure for Inside Mount Fit

For an inside mount, all measurements should be taken within the window casing.

  1. Measure the Depth
Measure the depth at the top of the inside window casing. This ensures adequate space for secure mounting and helps determine if a flush mount (where the product sits entirely within the frame) is possible. Minimum depth requirements vary by shade type.
  2. Measure the Width
Measure the width at three points: Top, Middle, Bottom
Record the smallest measurement. Round each measurement down to the nearest 1/8 inch.
  3. Measure the Length
Measure the Height at three places: Top, Middle, Bottom
Use the largest measurement when ordering. Round each measurement down to the nearest 1/8 inch. This total length includes the headrail.
  4. Width Deduction
Deduct 3/8" from your smallest width measurement. This becomes your Ordered Width, which equals both the Headrail Width and Fabric Width.
    ExampleWindow Width 30 inches → Deduction 3/8 inches → Ordered Width 29 5/8 inches

Tips for Inside Mount

Side Gaps

A slight gap on either side is normal for inside mount Roman shades and allows smooth raising and lowering.

Frame Depth Check

Always check your window frame depth before ordering. If it is insufficient, an outside mount may be a better option.

Mounting Surface

Make sure the casing can support mounting hardware. Mounting into plastic frames is not recommended.

Measure for Outside Mount Fit

For an outside mount, shades and blinds are installed on the wall or trim surrounding the window, extending beyond the window opening.

  1. Check Mount Space
Measure the flat wall surface above the window where the brackets will be installed.
Ensure sufficient space for secure bracket and headrail installation.
  2. Measure the Width
Measure the full width of the window, including the frame if applicable.
Recommend extending at least 2-3 inches beyond the window casing on each side to minimize light gaps and ensure full coverage.
This total measurement will be your ordered width.
  3. Measure the Length
Measure the length from where you plan to install the headrail to where you want the bottom of the shade or blind to reach.
Recommend extending at least 10-16 inches above the window casing for its stack when fully rolled up and to maximize the window's exposure.
This total measurement will be your ordered length.

Tips for Outside Mount

Essential Considerations

  • Ensure Overlap: Add adequate overlap on all sides and ensure 2 inches of flat space above the frame for a secure, private fit.
  • Operational Check: Check that handles, furniture or sills won't obstruct the smooth movement of the shade.

Design Benefits

  • Aesthetic Enhancement: Create the illusion of larger windows and hide uneven frames for a taller, more polished appearance.
  • Minimize Gaps: Reduces light leakage, provides superior light blockage and enhanced privacy.
